We all love being fit and healthy. We go to the gym, get out on walks and jog everyday and do a lot of other activities to keep ourselves fit and in shape. People join Zumba and Aerobics Classes to make working out more entertaining. One such activity is Barre. Now you might be amongst the majority of people who at some point ask the important question “what is Barre?”. Read on to find out more.

What is Barre?

Barre is a fusion of Pilates, ballet and fitness. Sounds great, right? It is a high intensity workout activity with cardio breaks, ballet moves and Pilates exercises. It is traditionally a conditioning form of exercise practised by ballet dancers but it is now gaining popularity among the general masses too. People from all levels of fitness can now join one of the many studios that offer Barre Sessions.

What are the benefits of Barre?

Barre sessions are said to bring 3 changes in your body physically. Firstly, it improves your posture by working on the alignment and stability. Secondly, it makes us conscious of our ankle and feet movement and gives us better awareness and stability. These sessions are conducted without shoes. So, the feet movements and stability are brought into a more natural and harmonious active state. Finally, the physique and the structure get leaner and more feminine. There are dance moves incorporated and thus, your body becomes like that of a dancer’s.

What to wear to the classes?

Wearnormal leggings and a sports top….and for the footwear, use socks that have great grip or just go barefoot!

What do they do in these classes?

There are many sessions and they focus on dynamic and invigorating workouts. Then they will continue with a warm up and sequence of upper-body exercises, which include free weights, push-ups, planks and other moves to target the biceps, triceps, chest, and back muscles. And then comes the ballet barre moves to focus on thigh muscles. These classes are an hour long and go on for 2 months for a basic level.

How does Barre work compare to other types of exercise?

Barre strengthens all of your core muscular structure. You work on glutes, abdomen and other basic muscles that keep your body functioning as it must do. Every class is different and it is advised that you follow a similar sequence of workouts throughout the course of your session. It is also know to improve your PC muscle strength.
